Growing up in Huntington Beach, California, Jerry began surfing at the age of eight. He built small boats to skim in the tidal flats and surf the small waves. This early fascination with form and function continued into his adult life as he shaped surfboards, boats, and houses, bringing forms from the sea into his work.
In 1984 Jerry began turning bowls from freshly harvested Hawaiian trees, incorporating his many years of woodworking experience into this new art form.
“I have a love affair with trees,” Jerry says. “I search out recycled trees and logs from sustainable harvesting operations. The bowl begins with the study of telltale signs in each log that may reveal hidden beauty. From this I unwrap one of nature’s most enchanting gifts and the tree is allowed to extend itself beyond its rooted existence, through my hands into the client’s.”
Sought after not only for his bowls, Jerry also enjoys success as a teacher. He regularly demonstrates and speaks at the College of the Redwoods in Eureka, California, and has been a guest instructor at the prestigious Woodworking West national symposium in Utah.
Jerry is a member of the Sonoma County Woodworkers Association, Redwood Empire Woodturners, Bodega Bay Allied Arts and the Sebastopol Center for the Arts.
After having lived in Hawaii for many years, Jerry and his family now reside in Bodega Bay, California, where he teaches his craft to other woodworkers through the Jerry Kermode School of Woodturning.
